The Pirate Effect

By: Morgan Chmielewski

The quickly approaching Gasparilla Festival has everyone ready to celebrate. Exactly why they are celebrating? It seems most do not know, or rather, do not care.

Isha McLennan, a UT Freshman from D.C., expressed her enthusiasm for the extravaganza that was approaching. She explained, “I expect it to be “crazy, exciting and unforgettable.” The focus of her weekend would be on hanging out with friends.

Known to few, Gasparilla began on the campus of UT. The story of pirates taking over the city is fabricated, but it calls for one great celebration for all. A reason for crowds of people to gather and celebrate belligerently does not have to be significantly meaningful.

It seems that the city of Tampa just wants an excuse to be with friends and have fun with the entire community. If the story of Gasparilla has faded into history, that is fine. The camaraderie of thousands of partiers will suffice! The spirit of Tampa strongly lives on through Gasparilla 2013.
