It’s Paola — with an O — Crespo

By Joe Humphrey

Frustrated by the ways her name is mispronounced or misspelled, Paola Crespo once placed her Starbucks order under the name Mufasa.

“Surprisingly, they spelled that right,” noted the sophomore, a movie buff and writing major. In discussing goofs by professors and baristas alike, Crespo rattled off a bevy of P-names, including one she especially dislikes.

“As long as it’s not Paula,” she said, pounding her fists on the desk. “I’m not Paula. It’s not a U. It’s an O.”

Crespo grew up in the Bahamas and came to the University of Tampa in January 2011. While she’s yet to find a nicer beach than her hangout in Nassau, Crespo said the island didn’t offer much for teenagers to do. Now 19, she’s finding more activities to enjoy on the UT campus, where she serves as opinion editor of The Minaret.
